🌿 Our Learning Rhythm

The Energetic Nature Learning Community at EcoRoots Sanctuary

At EcoRoots Sanctuary, we intentionally align our learning cycles with Florida’s natural rhythms, rather than the traditional industrial school calendar.

Florida is a subtropical environment. The land here moves differently — through heat, rain, growth, rest, and renewal. Rather than pushing against these cycles, we listen to the land and learn with it.

Our year is designed around periods of deep engagement followed by intentional rest, mirroring how healthy ecosystems function in nature.

Our Annual Cycle

Spring Term (February – May)

This is our primary learning season. Cooler temperatures, active ecosystems, and longer outdoor days make this the ideal time for exploration, movement, and immersive, land-based learning.

Summer Rest (June – July)

Florida’s peak heat and storm season. During this time, the land itself slows, conserves energy, and adapts. We rest, travel, integrate, and allow space for unstructured play and family rhythm.

Fall Term (August – November)

A second learning season focused on growth, stewardship, leadership, and community connection. We conclude the term with a family campout, celebrating learning through shared experience on the land.

Winter Rest (December – January)

The inward season. A time for reflection, integration, storytelling, and restoration before the next cycle begins.

🌎 Why We Do It This Way

Nature does not operate on constant output — it moves in cycles of growth and rest.

By honoring Florida’s seasons, children are able to:

• Stay regulated and engaged
• Spend more time outdoors safely
• Develop a deeper relationship with the land
• Learn through experience rather than pressure

This rhythm supports not only learning, but well-being, curiosity, and connection — to self, community, and the natural world.

Living Boho Apothecary — Community Rooted Partnership

Eco Roots Sanctuary is honored to be a long-term partner of Living Boho Apothecary in Clermont, FL.

Together, we bring free nature-based education to families during major community and Main Street events including:

  • Cookies & Cocoa
  • Hometown Holidays
  • Harvest Festival
  • Seasonal markets and community celebrations

At every event, Eco Roots hosts interactive kid stations right outside Living Boho, helping families enjoy hands-on nature learning while they shop.

Inside the shop, Living Boho Apothecary serves as Eco Roots Sanctuary’s official Donation Hub, where community members can drop off art supplies, nature tools, craft materials, and other items that support our programs.

This partnership is supported by Cristina Barreto, Master Clinical Herbalist and owner of Living Boho. She believes deeply in community, nature education, and healing — and her support helps Eco Roots grow new programs throughout Lake County.

🌿 Frequently Asked Questions

The Energetic Nature Learning Community is a land-based, energetically informed learning program hosted by EcoRoots Sanctuary.

We support children in learning with the land and with their own energy, using exploration, movement, observation, creativity, and relationship rather than desks, worksheets, or rigid expectations.

A core part of our approach is Human Design. We recognize that every child has a unique energetic makeup and learning process. By understanding each child’s design, we are able to:

• Support their natural learning rhythm
• Honor how they best engage, rest, and participate
• Help them feel seen and understood
• Teach them how to advocate for their needs energetically

This allows children to learn who they are while learning about the world.
Human Design is used as a supportive awareness tool, not a label.

We observe each child’s energetic design to better understand:

• How they process information
• How they engage with others
• When they need movement, rest, or space
• How they naturally contribute to the group

This helps us guide children in a way that aligns with their natural energy, while also teaching them language and awareness to advocate for themselves respectfully and confidently.
We currently offer two programs:

🌱 Rewilding Program (Big Kids)
• Ages 4–17
• Four-year-olds typically participate as siblings
• Mixed-age learning is intentional and supported through energetic awareness

🍃 Wild Ones Program (Toddlers & Littles)
• Ages 1–6
• Designed for early exploration, sensory play, and land connection

Because we are energetically informed and land-based, mixed-age learning works beautifully and mirrors how children naturally learn in community.

We are designed to support homeschooling families.

Families remain responsible for their homeschool compliance, while we provide consistent, meaningful, outdoor learning experiences.

This is not a traditional co-op, but a hands-on learning community. Parents are present and actively involved — learning, creating, crafting, and exploring alongside their children.

Learning here is shared, relational, and community-based.

Our learning naturally weaves together:
• Science & ecology
• Geography & map studies
• Social-emotional learning
• Systems thinking
• History (with a strong emphasis on place, people, and patterns)

We also collaborate with other homeschool groups and participate in community-based, project learning.
Yes — in a developmentally appropriate, project-based way.

During the fall term (August–November), we often participate in monthly projects, which may include:

• Reading logs
• Book reports
• History or research projects
• Creative presentations

These projects are often shared with or connected to the broader homeschool community.
We follow a seasonal learning rhythm aligned with Florida’s natural environment:

• Spring Term: February – May
• Summer Rest: June – July
• Fall Term: August – November
• Winter Rest: December – January

Rather than operating year-round, we honor periods of deep engagement followed by intentional rest — mirroring how ecosystems function.
Florida’s climate is intense. Summer heat and storms, as well as winter’s inward energy, are not ideal for sustained outdoor learning.

Because we are land-based, we learn to listen to the land.

When the land rests, we rest.
When the land regulates, we regulate.

These breaks support:
• Nervous system regulation
• Integration of learning
• Family rhythm and travel
• Long-term sustainability for children and guides

Rest is not a pause from learning — it is part of learning.
Rewilding Program
•Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
•2 hours per day

Wild Ones Program
•Thursday
•1.5 hours

Each week centers around a theme connected to land, ecosystems, history, or place-based awareness.

Learning includes:
•Nature exploration
•Hands-on stations and builds
•Mapping, storytelling, and creative expression
•Group games and reflection circles
We follow a living curriculum, not a boxed one.

Themes are thoughtfully planned and shared in advance, but learning remains experiential and responsive.

We use:
•Hands-on learning stations
•Project-based exploration
•Creative expression

At the beginning of each semester, children create a binder or folder that grows with them. This becomes a living record of their learning.

Each child also keeps an observation journal, which we use regularly for drawing, noting patterns, and reflecting on what we see in nature.

👉 We encourage families to purchase our recommended observation journal here.

That’s expected — and supported.

Our environment allows for:
• Movement and sensory regulation
• Emotional expression
• Flexible participation

Children are not required to sit still or perform on demand. We guide rather than force.

EcoRoots Sanctuary is nature-centered, not religious.

While we honor Earth wisdom and energetic awareness, we welcome families from all belief systems.

This community is a good fit for families who:

• Value outdoor learning
• Appreciate seasonal rhythms
• Are curious about energetic awareness
• Want learning to feel relational, not rushed

Alignment matters to us. We encourage conversation and questions before enrolling.
